An Open Letter To The Press: Nicole Nelson represents each of the more than 6,000 people in the United States who are in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant in order to survive, but can not find a match. Her American Indian heritage has made it much more difficult for her search to be successful. This is because the list of possible donors, as documented by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is severely lacking in Black, African American, Latino, American Indian, Asian, or Hawaiian candidates. As tissue traits are inherited, a patient's best chance for finding a match is with someone of the same race or ethnicity. A nationwide plea to all of our citizens to volunteer as potential donors would greatly increase the chance for survival of everyone who is looking for a match. This would allow all of our citizens to have an equal chance regardless of their ethnic or racial background. Each year 35,000 children and adults of all racial and ethnic backgrounds are added to the list of those in need. Unfortunately, a significant number are also removed because their time ran out. As a country, the more that we all understand about our brothers and sisters in need, the better our chances of helping them. Respectfully, Robert M Johnson, MD

Dear Health Care Professional: Rapid changes in the health care system have thrust mid-level managers and supervisors into management positions for which they are seldom prepared. Antioch New England's Community Health Care Management Certificate Program is designed specifically to meet these emerging needs. It combines management theory and self-discovery to address issues of leadership, communications, group relations, finance, policy and best practices. This nine-month program has been embraced for two consecutive years by a host of health care providers. Some students are sent by these institutions and others enroll on their own initiative, recognizing the advantages the program offers. They can enter with or without a bachelor’s degree, earn 12 graduate credits and a certificate of completion. Students are clinical nurse leaders, physician practice managers, administrators, mental health program directors, finance officers, physicians, and social workers. They come together to learn from faculty, leaders in the field of health care, and each other. As you can see, this is a cutting edge, but fledgling program. The next session begins on August 28th and applications are considered on a rolling basis. Scholarships are available for qualifying students. If you are interested in receiving information about the program, please contact the Antioch New England Admissions Office at 603-357-6265 or admissions@antiochne.edu. I am also available at rhertneky@antiochne.edu to answer any questions or speak more in depth about the curriculum and the details of the program. Best regards,
